Form & Light

A first-year study combining planar components and cut solids to test enclosure and light.

Project brief

Geometric transformation studies using repeated planes, cubes and apertures.

Developed in 2018, the project combines two systems: Wrapping Ribbons, based on twelve zigzag components, and Shrinking Voids, based on cut and shifted cubes. Their hybrid tests the relationship between planar boundaries and volumetric enclosure.

01 / Formal rules

Planar and solid systems

The planar system repeats zigzag components at different scales and orientations. Intersections form connected spaces, and stepped edges suggest circulation. The solid system cuts and shifts cubes to produce voids of varying size.

The hybrid, titled Stretching Shrinking Corners and Trimming Planes, combines these operations. Museum board, foam and acrylic models test the resulting geometry.

02 / Physical testing

Apertures and lighting

Openings establish sightlines between internal spaces and admit light through the assembly. Different views emphasize either the planes or the enclosed volumes.

Physical models, projected drawings and photographs record these conditions. Cast shadows describe the depth and spacing of components and the continuity of the openings.
